What's the verdict on the FISA/Protect America Act rewrite?

I'm pleased if they can get it passed. Its flawed but better than what it could have been.

And now you have the president playing politics with national security, whining about how congress won't let him be a tinpot dictator, and wants immunity for special interests. Is this possible? Yes, especially considering the new charges that the Bush Administration (or charitably, its lackeys) compromised national security in order to leak the bin laden tape.

The Democrats have managed to take a bill that was absolutely horrible and turn it into something thats still pretty horrible, but not as horrible as it could have been. So I guess they deserve some credit. But its a compromise. And its a compromise in an area that shouldn't be compromised in. These so called "umbrella warrants" are an affront to personal liberty, and they provide yet another legal loophole to be abused at will.

Color me unimpressed.
