Christians comprise the majority of the people in this country and other Western nations, though. And these folks take part in the same capitalist celebrations everyone else does. So you can't distinguish between how Christians and almost everyone else marks December 25.

Perhaps the real reason that the powers that be are against Christmas is because, within the circles of Government, it is impossible to find three wise men and a virgin-and you can't host a nativity play with just donkeys.

"The powers that be" are not against Christmas. That's a canard from the right to scare voters. Some people just have sensitivity to people who aren't Christian, that's all. Caring about minorities (a term that encompasses more than race) shouldn't be frightening.

This is not a Left-Right Republican-Democrat Issue. It's about everyone's right to celebrate their religious beliefs as they want. We should be including all religions, not excluding one.

Since Christmas is not under attack, I fail to understand the concern. True, I suggested renaming Christmas in my screed, but that's because the way we celebrate Christmas has nothing to do with Christ :P, so calling December 25 "Christmas" is a misnomer.

Never in all my life have I been so tempted to tell my family that I'm through with Christmas for good. It's a monsterous hassle during a time of year that it's best (and safer) for someobody to hide away from the end of November to New Years Eve and avoid the angry, ill-tempered, flu-carrying crowds of shoppers. Being an Athiest only makes me feel more justified.

Now, where'd I put that damned Festivus pole?

Thats what I said in my post though. You can't rename it because the christians actually celebrate christmas.
Whereas everyone thats not christian (79% of the country) celebrates the secular government rip-off of christmas.

Christmas is still and always will be a christian holiday (ripped off of pagans, bah, shut up), so despite the fact that it is celebrated for the wrong reasons, its still celebrated correctly by some.

(I think I got this right anyway)

Allow me to quote the ever bold Stephen Colbert:

"Only 24 more shopping days until Christmas, or Xmas, if you hate Jesus. Which would make it strange to celebrate his birthday in the first place."

Think for yourself.
Question authority.
Throughout human history, as our species has faced the frightening, terrorizing fact that we do not know who we are, or where we are going in this ocean of chaos; it has been the authorities- the political, the religious, the educational authorities- who attempt to comfort us by giving us order, rules, regulations. Informing, forming in our minds their view of reality. To think for yourself you must question authority and learn how to put yourself in a state of vulnerable, open-mindedness; chaotic, confused, vulnerability to inform yourself.
Think for yourself.
Question authority.

It stems from the fact that Athiests by definition have no religious holidays. But since a lot of us athiests are descended from Christians, the tradition has stuck, and if anything, it should stay this way for the sake of the children.
