At first, I thought The Colbert Report, a spinoff of The Daily Show, hilariously spoofed egotistical right-wing blowhards such as Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and Rush Limbaugh. Now, though, I find the show, while still clever, dreadfully annoying. Colbert always scores bullseyes with his satires, but he seems to have forgotten the objects of his spoofs are bloody irritating. Channeling too much of their noxious styles makes Colbert noxious as well. In retrospect, The Colbert Report would have been better as an occasional segment on The Daily Show instead of a regular program. The schtick wouldn't have gotten old and tiresome then.

The only problem is when he invents the news. Lieber (as much as I like David Cross), and that stupid thing at the Duke Cunningham auction, etc...

I do agree that that is a core problem with the show... He has to make it about him, not the news.

Oh. and He shouldn't do "the word" every night. Only do it when its funny. That segment bombs regularly, and there aren't that many ways to weasel out of it when he's tanking. And when that thing's not funny, it really is a lecture.

Colbert is funny as hell.

He can only get majorly irritating if you take things at face value. For a good deal of his show, you need to know what exactly he is satirizing. If you know why and what he is making fun of, the entire show is usually non-stop laughs.

I do understand what Colbert satirizes. But I can only take so much "frothing jingoistic right-winger," whether he's spoofing or serious, before I have to turn off the TV. ;) Colbert has long since exceeded my tolerance level.

I will say Colbert's disembowelment of Dubya and the Washington press corps, right in front of their faces, was hilarious, though. :)

Did you see the ABC video? Instead of showing his "audition" they just kept the camera focused on Bush for it's entirety, and you could see how he reacted to EVERYTHING. It was great.

Indeed. The man's not used to hearing criticism directly, because he brooks no dissent from his viewpoints, and here Colbert was ripping him to shreads, to his face. Bush's facial expressions were priceless. :)
